Black Canyon:
The flows were supposed to stay around 3200 cfs for the month of June but as our luck would have it, they dropped the flows to around 2300 cfs a week before we arrived. The water began to warm up when we got to the Gunnison and the Salmon Flies turned on.
We fished the gorge for three days and even with the mass amounts of Salmon Flies, we saw little action on the surface. Throughout the day we ripped streamers or nymphed big stones, hares ears, prince nymphs and Caddis emergers. Around two hours before dark the Caddis would blow up and we would get some great dry fly fishing for 8-16 inch browns and bows. We took a few fish each in the 17-19 inch range but the average was pretty low.
Even though the Salmon flys were starting to turn on, we wanted a few days of solitude and since this was Tom and Derek’s first time in the area we decided to jump into the Canyon for two days. We landed a bunch of small browns and some nice bows but were unable to land any of the monsters. We turned a fair number of big boys while huckin streamers but couldn’t connect.
Telluride Bluegrass and a face full of Salmon Flys!
We are approaching our annual trip to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River to hit up the infamous Salmon Fly hatch. The past two years were blown out and the fishing was tough, but it is always nice to get down into the canyon and there is always the possability for some humangous trout! Regardless of the fishing, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival is always jumpin and we will be steady crunkin!
Heading down to Salt Lake City for the Best of the West!
Other than Josh not making it to the finals… the BOTW was sick.

This is our least interactive/fun part of our website but soon it will be full of the most amazing news on earth!
